2026 Trip - Day 3: Leaving a Bad Hostel

Yesterday, Jonas and I agreed to leave the hostel (European Hostel Central Pattaya) and find another place. I am not entirely sure about his reason. It seemed to be something to do with a payment issue since he lost his card. For me, the hostel was in very bad condition, especially the toilet.

Last night, I started thinking about whether I want to continue to hang out with him. He casually asked me for money twice yesterday after I had already paid for his dinner because he does lost his card and have no cash at all. Both times were for beer and water, and I gave it to him, which, in hindsight, I feel skeptical about. I ended up losing money by lending to him. I had only withdrawn 1000 baht and paid a 250 baht ATM fee, but when he paid me back through PayPal, he only returned the exact amount he owed, not including the withdrawal fee.

He could not keep track of how much he owed me. Some payments were missing, and I had to remind him. I had to calculate and tell him exactly how much he owed me in euros to make it easier for him, as he could not track it himself. I did not want to keep lending him money, especially since my cash was already low and I did not want to withdraw again so soon just to pay another withdrawal fee. I even told him about the high withdrawal fee, but he still did not seem to care. About an hour after he went out for a drink, he came back and asked for another 20 baht for water. I told him to just keep the bottle and refill it. Even I avoid buying bottled water just to save money.

He was very eager to join me today. I had told him I maybe get a foot massage later because my feet were sore, he said he wanted to join me for massage too, I did not expect him to say that. I was wondering how he was going to pay for that, and realized he obviously can't pay for it since the only way for him to pay anything now is via online and expected me to pay again.

He woke up early and greeted me before 10 in the morning with these intense, almost restless eyes. It felt like he wanted me to get up. Not long after, I started packing. He asked if I wanted him to wait downstairs. I did not really understand why he asked that, so I told him it was up to him. Around 11, after about an hour of packing, I went down to the lobby. To my surprise, he was not there. I do not know if he went out to get something, but I thought he would have told me, since he knew I was packing and could come down at any moment.

Finished Packing!

I decided I did not want to wait in uncertainty. I was tired and extremely annoyed of him. At that point, I decided to leave on my own.

I thought about walking to the main road to get a songthaew, but I was not fully sure how it worked. I also realized I had not done enough research because I had been busy working on my laptop the past few days. So I ordered a Bolt driver instead to take me directly to another hostel in Jomtien, Pattaya and cost 99 Baht. It was about a 20 minute drive. When I arrived and asked at reception, I found out the price they quoted was higher than Agoda. They wanted 250 baht per night, while on Agoda it was around 9.50 AUD. (That's about 220 Baht.)

Just as I was about to book online, I received a message from Jonas. I checked the time. It was five minutes before noon. He said he was waiting for me in the lobby at the previous hostel. I instantly felt a bit bad. I told him where I was and said he could book online if he wanted to join me. He said yes and then asked for the transport details and the fare.

After I checked in and went to my room, he messaged again asking where I was, which hostel, the price, and how to get there. I had already sent all of this information earlier. I found it strange that he could not just scroll back and read the messages. I started to feel annoyed. I was already tired and had not slept properly because someone in the room had been snoring loudly all night. At that point, I decided not to engage anymore and let him find the information himself in our conversation, which was sent less than half an hour earlier.

More than an hour passed and he still did not show up. Then he sent another message asking how much he owed me. I could not believe it. I had already sent that to him the day before. That was the moment I realized how lazy he was, expecting me to go back through everything and repeat it for him. I ignored the message. I felt a bit frustrated with myself. My last long trip I had a similar experience with another traveler who was also lazy. I should have known better. This time, he was even worse. I decided not to waste any more time or energy on it. I settled into my new bed and continued working.

I was exhausted and probably took a nap. The night before, after midnight, two people had come into the dorm. One of them snored so loudly that the whole room felt like it was vibrating. I could not sleep at all. In the morning, I noticed that the man from that bed got up and started working in the hostel. I found this completely wrong. If he works there, then his colleagues or guests must have told him how loud he snores, maybe even complained. Yet they still let him sleep in the dorm with guests. It feels very sneaky and inconsiderate.

That evening I found a hacker selling chicken fried rice for 60 Baht nearby direction to the beach. It was delicious.
