2026 Trip - Day 14: Lunch That Turned Into a Panic Moment

Not sure if I should write today, but I want to be more consistent and write every day, whether anything happens or not. This blog is not only for readers, it is also for myself, to remember how I spent my trip and how much I spent.

After waking up, I stayed in bed on my phone until the staff came to the room after 12 noon, probably because I had not paid for my room for today yet. I was not feeling very energized. For the past few days I have been booking my room day by day because I noticed the price changes every day. It is actually cheaper to book daily instead of booking several days at once on Agoda.

Later I sat on my laptop trying to work, but around 1 pm I became very hungry. My cash is running low and I really did not want to withdraw more money. The ATM withdrawal fee in Thailand is extremely high. It is 250 baht per transaction no matter how much money you take out.

After staying in the same place for more than a week, I finally noticed a small local restaurant less than five minutes from the hostel. Meals start from about 60 baht, so I ordered seafood fried rice.

Sea food fried rice with large squid ring!
I was the only one during lunch

The food looked very good. It came with three big squid rings and two prawns. I rarely eat squid like this. I usually prefer prawns over other seafood. When I started eating, I realized it was a bit spicy and I had forgotten to bring my own water, which I usually do. I looked around and saw they did not serve free water either. I knew this place would not accept cards, so I thought I would just finish the meal and go back to the hostel to drink water since it is so close.

Then suddenly I started choking.

I tried really hard to cough it out, but after several attempts I did not know what to do. For a moment I thought I might have to run to the fridge to grab a drink, but somehow I managed to swallow the whole squid ring. I had a small panic attack at that moment. I did not even know if I should call for help. I felt like nobody would know what to do anyway.

After that little incident I kept eating and started thinking about how strange it was. I almost always bring water when I eat, or the restaurant gives complimentary water. The only time I had no water while eating, I choked.

Anyway, I continued eating and then, what the actual hell… I choked again. The second squid ring got stuck as well. I could not believe it. I ended up swallowing the whole thing again. This time I just sat there for a few seconds trying to process what was happening today. There was still one squid ring left, so this time I decided to cut it into smaller pieces with my spoon and fork. That made it much easier to eat. I guess I am just not very experienced with squid.

In the evening I went back to the same place and ordered chicken basil with rice instead. It was not bad at all for 60 baht.

I spent most of the day in the hostel. I am not sure why I felt so tired. I think the long walk yesterday for more than an hour really wore me out. I tried to work, but my eyes kept filling with tears from being tired, so I ended up taking several naps throughout the day.
